A follow up to the 2003 film UNDERWORLD, EVOLUTION continues to show the war between Vampires and Lycans (Werewolves) following the assassination of the Vampire leader Viktor (Nighy) by Selene (Beckinsale) after his treachery is discovered. Selene, a Vampire, and Michael (Speedman), a Vampire/Lycan hybrid, set out to discover the true nature of their bloodlines.

While I quite enjoyed the first UNDERWORLD, I feel that this second installment really misses the mark. While the set design and special effects make-up is outstanding, and the darkness of the Underworld really comes across onscreen, the convoluted script is both verbose and hard to follow at times, making many in my theatre leave scratching their heads. It feels as though scenes were added spur of the moment leaving the screenwriter to have to add pages of dialogue for certain characters to explain something that has just happened which seems to contradict other things that we have been previously told in the story. There seems to be a lot of explaining going on in EVOLUTION. What I mean by this is that there are several scenes where minor characters appear to explain what is going on to the main characters and some of this feels really exculpatory.

While fans of the first film or serious supernatural film lovers will enjoy the film for the Vampire/Lycan lore, and action film fans will be happy with the complex fight sequences, I think this film falls short of the original.

Also saw the new SILENT HILL trailer starring Sean Bean in an adaptation of the popular video game. Looks wonderful and we can see it starting this Spring!
