TRANSFORMERS is based on the very popular line of Hasbro toys from back in the day. A group of Aliens has come to Earth looking for a box known as the "allspark", which they believe will end the war between their rival factions - the Autobots and the Decepticons. The Aliens hide among humans by turning themselves into cars, airplanes, and tanks. A high school student named Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) holds the key to helping them find out where the allspark is hiding.

With Michael Bay films you know the special effects are going to be great, there will be a lot of action and much stuff will blow up. You don't assume there will be much of a plot, you primarily go for the action. TRANSFORMERS is a pleasant surprise because along with the typical Michael Bay handiwork, there is actually kind of a nice story hidden below.

Oh don't get me wrong, much stuff blows up....and when the transformers actually transform....hella cool. But there is a really nice story of not leaving your friends behind and helping those in need no matter how different they are from you. It's nice to see an action movie that has not only great action sequences, but also has a message if you choose to listen.

The casting is really dead on in this film. Shia LaBeouf is great as Sam and his comedic timing is outstanding. Megan Fox holds her own as Sam's love interest Mikaela. Josh Duhamel and Tyrese are really good as military guys trying to make it through. There are a lot of really great cameos including Anthony Anderson as a geeky computer hacker and John Turturro as an X-Files government type. My absolute favorites, however, were Kevin Dunn and Julie White as Sam's parents. Their scenes are laugh out loud funny and they have amazing timing together. It's worth seeing the film just to watch them onscreen.

TRANSFORMERS is a surprisingly well scripted, kick-butt action film. A little long, but worth the investment.

Suzanne is obviously not a Transformers aficionado, I had to add the all important Peter Cullen credit.
