| SPIDERMAN 3 Written by: Sam Rami, Ivan Rami, Alvin Sargent Directed by: Sam Rami Starring: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Bryce Dallas Howard, Thomas Hayden Church, Bruce Campbell, Topher Grace Rated: PG-13 Running Time: 2 hours 20 min. In case you have been on top of a mountain in Katmandu.....SPIDERMAN 3 opens this weekend. One of the most anticipated releases this year, screenings are sold out all over the country, a testament to the power of the past two films. I am not going to go into the story too much so as not to give away any of the many twists and turns in this film, but as the film opens Peter Parker a.k.a. Spiderman (Tobey Maguire) is coasting along with a pretty good life, his work is going well, Spiderman is loved and admired by all and he is planning to ask girlfriend MJ(Kirsten Dunst) to marry him. A strange substance begins to infect Parker and he is forced to choose if he wants to be good or evil. SPIDERMAN 3 is a good film on several levels. The script is really funny and shows different sides to all of your favorite characters from the prior films. (One spoiler : Maguire has a hilarious dance sequence choreographed by Marguerite Derricks that is not to be missed!) The film is a little long at 2 hours and 20 min, but there is so much exposition - particularly in the first hour - that there really isn't anything that could be cut and have the film be quite the same. Maguire plays the perfect geek but still manages to portray Spidey for the hero he is. James Franco does another great turn as Harry and shows how much the character is torn between revenge and friendship. Dunst has much more range this go round as MJ and is a much more sympathetic character in S3. Newcomers Topher Grace (Venom), Thomas Hayden Church (Sandman) and Bryce Dallas Howard (Gwen) are great additions to the cast and really fun to watch. Bruce Campbell (EVIL DEAD) has a crazy cameo as a French Maitre D, which is one of the best scenes in the film. As usual, we have great fight scenes and cool CGI and the morality that all of us has the ability to choose good or evil and sometimes that line is blurred comes thru really well. 4 out of 5 |
