SILENT HILL, based on the highly popular video game by Konami, tells the story of Christopher and Rose Da Silva (Sean Bean and Rahda Mitchell). The Ohio couple's adopted daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) has been sleepwalking and having violent dreams about a place called Silent Hill, a ghost town whose residents all died in a mysterious fire in the 1970's. Rose decides to take Sharon to Silent Hill to see if she can figure out what is causing her disturbing behavior and ends up fighting demons and darkness to save her daughter.

While not a fan of the video game, I checked with some gamers and was told that there are several major differences between the film and the game. The main character Rose, is actually a man in the game, Sharon's name has been changed and the ending of the film is completely different.

This film is really bad. Laughably bad, actually. Witness one of the end scenes where someone is about to be confronted by a demon and the loud swell of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - type music. Ugh.

The special effects are good, but they are horribly overused. What is cool one or two times becomes really tedious the 34th time. The set design and lighting are both very detailed and creepy and do serve to add to the feeling of horror in the film. The scenes are extremely graphic and nauseating. I truly believe they got a discount on film blood and decided to use all of it in this film. It truly is, if you will excuse the pun, overkill.

The cast is pretty good, Rahda Mitchell does a good job with what she has been given, but there is very little substance to her role. Jodelle Ferdland was quite good as Sharon, a role which requires her to go beyond the limits of what a young girl should endure. Hopefully she is not having nightmares of her own after working on this film. Sean Bean is really good as well, but like Mitchell, his role is really not very well defined.

If you are a fan of the game, you might enjoy this film, or if you are into lots of blood and gore, check out SILENT HILL. If not this is definitely a "Skip It".

I saw this movie and almost left in the middle. It was such a confusing  movie that I ended watching it thinking it would make sense. It never did!
