| MIAMI VICE Directed by: Michael Mann Written by: Michael Mann and Anthony Yerkovich Starring: Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx, Justin Theroux (Charlie's Angels 2), Gong Li (Memoirs of a Geisha) Rated R Running time: 2hours 14 minutes MIAMI VICE is a new re visioning of the classic 1980's TV show from former Executive Producer Michael Mann and writer Anthony Yerkovich which follows an international drug deal with Miami-Dade cops Sonny Crockett (Farrell) and Ricardo Tubbs (Foxx). While Mann has shown great portrayals of the gritty life of crime in films such as COLLATERAL and HEAT, he truly falls short of the mark here. While you can appreciate the grainy film quality and guerilla fly-on-the-wall shots, it becomes really tedious after 2 hours. Many of the scenes are intercut with shots that have nothing to do with the plot and seem somewhat self-serving to the director. Many shots are drawn out and while they might be a pleasant shot to the eye, does little to add to the story and add to an already lengthy film. The script is utterly ridiculous, with dialogue like "If you can't do time, don't do crime." A public service announcement gone bad, perhaps? The bad, wordy dialogue tries to come across as hip and cool but just sounds stilted and comical. Even the actors seem over dramatic and fanciful, despite the best efforts of Farrell and Foxx. Even the special effects are cartoon-like. A trailer blows up and the effects were so bad that I was expecting to see Wiley E. Coyote and a balloon with the word "Boom" to appear. While not the worst film ever made, this retake on a classic lacks any resemblance to the things that made the series a classic to begin with. 1 out of 5 |
