CLERKS II Written, Directed and Edited by: Kevin Smith Starring: Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Rosario Dawson, Rosario Dawson, Jeff Anderson, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, Trevor Fehrman Rated R Running Time 97 minutes The long-anticipated sequel to CLERKS, this film follows the lives of Randal and Dante, two slackers from New Jersey as they deal with life changing events like weddings, moving, and parenthood. Fans of the characters from the first film and fans of Smith's style of filmmaking will undoubtedly be happy with CLERKS II. There are several very funny scenes with tons of Pop culture to make the worst Internet geek proud. I especially loved the "Lord of the Rings/Star Wars" discussion and this film contains my favorite line in a film this year ...."They're not gay...they're hobbits!". Cameos by Smith faves Jason Lee and Ben Affleck are also a fun addition. Rosario Dawson actually does some really nice work in this piece as does Trevor Fehman as Elias, the geeky virgin fast food worker. All in all CLERKS II isn't a great film. You have to be a true fan of the original to really appreciate all of the quirks of the film. And Smith really does push the boundaries of taste at times with scenes making fun of racial slurs and inter-species sex. However, much like the rest of Smith's works, he really doesn't care what you think. I like his filmmaking because he makes films that he is interested in seeing, much like Quentin Tarantino does. While certainly not a film for the entire family, CLERKS II does contain some hilarious scenes with a fun take on Pop Culture. 2 out of 5 |
