Saw Bewitched today......
Basically a remake of the old TV show, updated to take place in the TV
industry with Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman.
I wanted to like this film, I really really did. I liked the old TV show,
the clips looked great.....I liked people in the cast.
It really is a train wreck.
The story is really nonlinear. There is a plot line, but it gets so obscured
that you can't really remember where it is. The script is exceedingly not
funny. It is as though they said well we have Will Ferrell, we don't have to
have anyone writing funny things in the script....um actually, you do.
Poor Will Ferrell - I really like him, I think he is a wonderful comedic
actor and I think he is also quite good in the more dramatic moments, but in this
film, it is like everyone has put the burden on his shoulders to make this
mess of a film work. He really tries hard and his scenes are sometimes really
brilliant, but there is just too much dead space between his scenes to make it
all work.
Nicole Kidman, I find has two extremes in her films, she is either
exceptionally good, or really annoying. This was the latter. She has this weird
breathy thing she is doing with her voice, I assume she thinks it makes her seem
childlike or "witch-y" but it really doesn't. It is highly distracting. She is
overacting way to much in this film. It is a shame because it could have been
a great character with a very "real" sense of being, but she plays Isabel as
a charicture. Some of her scenes with Will are really good because she drops
the act and they seem to be having fun.
Michael Caine is great as always, I know he plays the same character often,
but he is just so entertaining, you can forgive him.
Steve Carrel is wonderful doing his Paul Lynne impression in his few scenes
but he totally steals the show. Makes up for the horrible American remake of
"The Office".
It certainly wasn't the worst film I have ever seen, it had some moments that
were really funny and enjoyable, just not enough of them. Wait for the video
or catch it at a cheap matinee.
