CFM INTERVIEWS BRANDON MOLALE - ONE OF THE STARS OF THE UPCOMING FILM "BALLS OF FURY"
by Suzanne Philips
assisted by Danielle Russell

You probably have seen Brandon Molale in one of his multitude of screen credits - RENO 911!, DODGEBALL, THE LONGEST YARD - but CFM wanted to sit down with Brandon at the busy Comic-Con convention last weekend in San Diego to find out what we can expect next from this very busy actor....

CFM: Tell me a little about your background
BM: I moved to Los Angeles in 1998, I played football for many years, played for Fresno State. I moved to Los Angeles NOT to be an actor, I had my own training business, I wanted to live down toward the beach. I am from the bay area. Within a month or two of moving down here I met some guys who were doing this football movie THE WATERBOY. They thought I would be perfect for it, and my first ever job in the business was doing football stunts on this huge movie. I started out like anybody else does in this business - a non-union extra and lowest man on the totem pole and now I start my 27th movie next month. So I know what it is like to keep pounding away at the pavement as a working actor. Keep going and hope to God that you enjoy doing what you are doing because sometimes it is a tough road but I have been very blessed to be a working actor.

CFM: What is coming out next for you.
BM: The big thing here at Comic-Con is BALLS OF FURY, which is coming out August 31st. I have known Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant for years. They almost killed me a couple years ago when I played Cadet Dupree. I was the bad ass cadet that everyone had to beat, and I got run over by a car. When we were filming, I really took one for the team and because of that I like to say they felt bad and they felt obligated to use me again. Or they were intimidated by my size and they thought "we better give this guy some more parts or he will kill me". I am back on RENO 911! for season 5, BALLS OF FURY, I have a part in the Joel Silver pilot MOONLIGHT, working with Eddie Murphy and Rob Schneider and just did my first horror film with Steven Weber, FARMHOUSE, which was a lot of fun. I wanted to explore that side because I have done a lot of comedies and this is really dark and people have never really seen me like that before. It is diversity for me, you never really get to see that side of me. I want to show people that I am not some big, dumb oath that is getting knocked around, I am a good actor. I want to keep doing all these different kinds of projects.

CFM: in BALLS OF FURY who do you play in the film?
BM: I play a male courtesan that Christopher Walken has enslaved in his underground lair. If you like RENO 911!, if you like slapstick comedies, you will like this film.

BM: There is a big rumor going around that myself and Duane "The Rock" Johnson are up for the film SHAZAM and people keep asking me what is going on with it. I keep telling people, I want to play this part. I believe that I am the right person for Captain Marvel. If it is offered to me I will accept. I believe that I can bring the right type of inner kid that I believe that Captain Marvel may struggle with. Becoming the big superhero that he is, then going back to being the Billy Batson character. I am a big kid at heart. I am a big inner geek here at Comic-Con. I played with GI Joe's and I collected all the comic books. I may be older now and I may have grown up, but I am still a kid at heart. I believe that is what is really going to set me apart to play this role. I think that true comic book fans will accept that what I can bring to this character is exactly what Captain Marvel has inside of him. If it is there and offered to me that I want to play the role. I would like to see Duane play Black Adam (a big nemesis of Captain Marvel) and I play Captain Marvel. I worked with him in THE RUN DOWN and I would love to work with him again.

Check out Brandon in BALLS OF FURY opening August 31st!

THE MONSTER SQUAD - CULT FAVORITE FINDS NEW HOME ON DVD ON IT'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY
by Suzanne Philips

It's a good year for Monsters and specifically for the cult classic THE MONSTER SQU

AD. This 1980's film about a group of monsters, led by Count Dracula, who are searching for a powerful amulet which would allow evil to rule the world, has long been a staple of horror fans the world over. People are passionate about this movie and fans have long been shouting for a DVD version so that they can retire their worn out VHS copies.

Well, fans now have their wish in spades. THE MONSTER SQUAD: 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION has just been released by Lionsgate films and this 2-disk set is packed with extras:

* A five-part retrospective with new interviews with Fred Dekker, Andre Gower,
Ryan Lambert, Ashley Bank and more
* Deleted scenes
* Animated Storyboard sequence
* Two separate audio commentaries
* Still Gallery
and more!

The DVD set hit the stores on July 24th, and already fans are having problems finding a copy for themselves as many stores have sold out.

At the 2007 Comic-Con in San Diego, Writer/Director Fred Dekker, actors Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert, Ashley Bank and Stephen Macht joined with a packed audience for a screening of the film. The line went around the block and fans lined up hours before just to show their support for what is for many of them, their favorite film of all time.

The production team sat down to discuss the film and shed some insight into just what makes this project so special.

FRED DEKKER (writer/director): (on the second time success of the film) At the time, Parents thought that it would be too scary for their kids, so we ended up with no audience. And then it went on Cable, and kids the age of the squad started to catch up on it and then they sort of grew this affection for it and started renting it and it just sort of grew this affection and nostalgia. I knew the movie worked with an audience because whenever we showed the movie to an audience they really responded, the problem was getting them into the seats in the first place.

About a year and a half ago I started to get inklings that people had this love and affection for this movie that I really didn't know about and it's been really great.

I have always loved blending genres, I get kind of bored if something is just kind of the same all the way through. I like laughs in my horror films and I like moments of poignancy in my dramas. MONSTER SQUAD is a genre of movie that has historically not succeeded. It is a tightrope to balance. Audience get confused sometimes when you ask them to laugh and be scared at the same time.

On the DVD release, the deleted scenes are less than we thought they would be. Most of them have to do with the marital difficulties of the parents (Stephen Macht and Mary Ellen Trainor). Thee is a whole section of the movie that we shot that we have no idea where it is. It is from the prologue where Van Helsing and his minions where they actually find Dracula and stake him. The producer was adamant that we keep the prologue as short as possible so it got cut.

ASHLEY BANK (Phoebe): Being here is great, it's like a big high school reunion. You get to see everyone again and it's kind of like being back in filming again. Most of my memories are specifically of filming (she was 5 at the time), the others probably remember more of the off-set stuff. I was terrified of Dracula (Duncan Regehr), I could not be around him. It actually worked because the monsters didn't actually spend time with us on set. I think that was partially because our hours on set were limited. Their coverage with us was actually done without us.

I realized the film had a second life when we went to a recent screening in Austin (2 sold out shows for fans on Easter Sunday). I had randomly gotten in touch with Andre (Gower) out of the blue and ran across his email address and he told me about the event in Austin and I was like "What? Cool!". I hadn't seen the film for ages and Andre and Fred and I were talking after the screening in Austin and were had forgotten how good the film is. Watching it in a packed house with people cheering you realize what a good film it actually is.

RYAN LAMBERT (Rudy): I remember the overall experience of making the movie was an incredible time. I had no idea this movement surrounding the film was happening. I was surprised when I got a call to go down for a screening in Austin and I was like "For What? Monster Squad? You watch that?" and they said "Everyone is watching it". We really didn't realize how big the movie was till Austin. I was literally stunned. I felt good for Fred, felt good for the movie.

ANDRE GOWER (Sean): I think we were all really good in this film. Call us a rag-tag group but I think it was a really cohesive group of younger actors who really brought it. There was a lot of work done in this movie and everyone really had their element and their characters and that is what I think resonates with the fans. They can all connect with one of these characters - the cool kid, the little sister, the fat kid. Everyone was one of those growing up so they can really connect with the film. Instead of the typical slasher film where the kids walk into the house at the wrong time and are the victims, we're the heroes going into the house at the wrong time and coming out successful. MONSTER SQUAD fans never disappeared, they just didn't have anywhere to go, and now with the screenings around the country and the DVD, they do.

So what are you waiting for? If you are a fan, you need to get this DVD to replace your VHS copy. If you have never seen the film, you know you are curious. The DVD retails for $19.98 and check for it at your local retailer before it's gone!

ULTIMATE CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION -

INTERVIEW WITH

ASSOCIATE PRODUCER CORINNE MARRINAN
by Suzanne Philips
assisted by Kelsey Leonard

Associate Producer Corinne Marrinan has seen it all. Having been with CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION from the beginning and going on to work on both CSI: MIAMI and CSI:NY, she is uniquely qualified to write about the shows. She has just released her second book on the subject, entitled "Ultimate CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." I spoke with Corinne at the recent Comic-Con convention and found out some great information on the book and the shows.

CFM: How did you get involved with the show?
CM: I knew Billy Peterson from Chicago, and had been a stage manager for the theatre. When the show was starting, he asked if I wanted to come out and work on the show and help out, he figured it would last for a couple of episodes and I have been working on it ever since. I am pretty much the luckiest girl in Hollywood right now.

CFM: Is this book a companion piece to your last book (CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION COMPANION for which Marrinan wrote the case files)?
CM: The last book was a was about each episode and what happened in each episode, this is much more a fiction within a fiction in a way. Because we treat it as though these characters are real people and these are their lives and this is the science that they practice and these are some of their cases and their case files so it is a little bit more of an extension of the fantasy and the fantasy of the show. The other book featured had writers, producers, designers talking about the show and how the show was made. Which for the first three seasons of the show, I think that was great because this was a new way of doing things, a new look for television and people wanted to know how that was achieved. Now, people kind of get it now, people have imitated it, and this covers seasons 1-6 but doesn't outline every episode the way the other one did. We chose different episodes that had a certain character on it or for DNA we selected a different episode for that.

CFM: Each show has a different look and visual style to it. Do you think there will be another show spin off or what direction do you see the show going in:
CM: I don't know of any plans for any further spin offs. The tone and look of the show is very important and Jerry Bruckheimer is obviously a master of everything and comes from an advertising background and has a hand in the merchandising and look of the show. Miami is very modern and colorful and daytime and Vegas is nighttime and gritty and lots of blacks. They do the film process differently and show colors differently. So you can turn it on and within seconds you know which one you are watching. The formulas are similar. Although Miami is more of a cop show, because in Miami the CSI's are actually cops and there is a difference in how that show is done.

CFM: Have you learned a lot about Forensics?
CM: Oh Yea, I had a theatre degree and in this book Steve Parker who is a forensic scientist in England, he checked my facts and he wrote the pages that had to do with Blood Spatter evidence, for example and I wrote the parts that had to do with the show. He made me look smarter than I am. We have a lot of experts who work on the show and they really keep us honest all the time and it is amazing to me that after all these years that a lot of "artsy" type people can sit around and have a conversation about "Of course the mass spectrometer couldn't do that" you know? I mean there is always more to learn in this field, though, because it is always changing and involving. It is a really exciting field and I hear that kids are enjoying the science of it. We just did this CSI: the Experience that is touring in museums, it is in Boston now. I worked on that pretty closely and to see that kids are really interested and excited by it. And it's not the murder and the gore they are excited by it, but the puzzle solving and the mystery of it.

You can check out this amazing book ULTIMATE CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION by Corinne Marrinan and Steve Parker, with a foreword by Jerry Bruckheimer. at your local bookstore or contact dk publishing at www.dk.com

ONE RING CELEBRATION - BILLY BOYD APPEARANCE
Saturday, March 10, 2007
Article and Photos by Suzanne Philips

This year's ONE RING CELEBRATION (ORC) put on by Creation Entertainment and The One Ring.net was held in a much smaller venue at the Burbank Airport Marriott in Burbank, California. The number of attendees was significantly less than prior years (estimated at about 200-300 on Saturday.) but guests seemed to be in agreement that they liked the new venue and Creation seemed to be more aware of the fans and attendees felt like it was more relaxed than at previous events.
