The 79th Annual Academy Awards
Hollywood, CA"
February 25, 2007

The 79th annual Academy Awards celebration was held tonight at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood and the word that best sums up the overall production is.....boring. Not that the actual winners of the awards were boring - they weren't. And Host Ellen Degeneres was funny and likeable, so we can't really say the ennui was due to her efforts. No, the poor direction and compete lack of reason for many of the segments are really to blame. The director and producers inserted many pointless segments that did nothing but add to the already plodding broadcast and distract from the actual winners. MORE

JOHN CENA DVD SIGNING

by Suzanne Philips
Glendale, CA
February 15, 2007

John Cena and  Suzanne Philips

WWE Champion and film star John Cena stopped by the FYE store in the Glendale Galleria mall in Glendale, California today to sign copies of the DVD release of his first film THE MARINE. Fans were lining up before the store even opened at 9am. The crowd was a mix of people: lots of children and families as well as singles and older folks. The store handed out 400 wristbands but there were upwards of 600 people who showed up to catch a glimpse of The Champ. Cena looked very tired and had just rushed over from a taping of "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson". The crowd went crazy when John arrived and the noise level was deafening. Cena posed for photos and signed autographs for about an hour and a half and despite seeming exhausted, was quite congenial with fans and everyone felt that their time in line was well worth the wait!

THE MARINE is out on DVD now so check your local retailers.

Sir Ian McKellen & Franz Ferdinand

Sir Ian McKellen, Zac Efron (from High School Musical) and the group Franz Ferdinand taped there Jimmy Kimmel Show tonight. Franz Ferdinand started the afternoon with a sound check on the outdoor Coors Light stage. All of the members stopped to sign autographs and personalize items for fans. I was pleased to hear that they were checking to make sure everyone was actually a fan and not an autograph hound. The music sounded really good, and if you haven't had time to check out their new album YOU COULD HAVE IT SO MUCH BETTER, pick it up!

Sir Ian McKellen and Zac Efron came in shortly before the show started and were gracious enough to sign for fans. Sir Ian also checked to make sure that the people were true fans.

I LOVE that celebrities are so fed up with the autograph hounds now that they are personalizing items and only signing one item per person. This is the only way the annoying collectors will go away.

THREE FOOLS FOR APRIL
Poetry Reading
Beyond Baroque
Venice, CA
April 1, 2006

by Suzanne Philips

Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center welcomed Scott Wannberg, Viggo Mortensen and Henry (Hank) Mortensen, known collectively as THREE FOOLS FOR APRIL, on Saturday for an evening of poetry and song. The facility hosted two 1-hour plus shows in the same evening, with different poems being highlighted in each session.

The three poets sat in a "kitchen table" type environment with the 70 seat audience in an intimate setting surrounding them on 3 sides.

Scott Wannberg, whose most recent book is HARVEY KEITEL, HARVEY KEITEL, HARVEY KEITEL, was quick witted and a great storyteller. His anti-war satire and anti-Bush sentiments resonated well with this audience. A moving rendition of his poem about the death of his mother was met with much approval and empathy from the audience. He also had the crowd in stitches with his politically satirical songs and was a big crowd favorite.

Viggo Mortensen, best known to many as one of the stars of THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY, has long been an accomplished poet and is on the board of directions of Beyond Baroque. Reading his own poetry as well as some works that audience members had given him, Viggo was clearly at ease in the room and his love for Poetry was clear to all. After stumbling over a word in one reading he informed the audience that he was " just an actor" who "reads the words they give me in the best way that I can". He also joked that unlike filmmaking "Tonight can't be fixed in post production!" Viggo's poetry was very visual and earthy, much like the man himself. His quiet delivery and low timbered voice was much appreciated by members of the audience.

Henry (Hank) Mortensen, Viggo's teenage son, made his debut tonight as featured poet. While having much in common with his famous father, Henry has a style all his own. His poetry is very biting and witty. Several of the pieces dealt with lost love and were very insightful for someone just leaving their teenage years. Henry also read several Haiku, one of which he had written in Japanese. After giving his dad a hard time for stumbling over words in one of the poems, Viggo responded with "The young are quick". Henry gave some back story on some of his poems and after spending a long time describing one poem, Viggo laughed and jokingly said "you should have seem him driving over here", but clarified that "no, actually he is a really good driver." Henry and Viggo had a great time riffing on each other and you could plainly see the love between father and son and how proud each was of the other.

The sold-out crowd was multi-cultural and very verbal with their praise for the readings. Many fans and friends had traveled from out of state and even out of the country to be there tonight.

After the show, the venue sold works by all three, including a limited edition spiral bound book that Henry had made up just for this show.

If you are interested in picking up works by any of these three guys, check out Perceval Press.

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Beth, Suzanne, Dog

Photo Gallery

I attended a taping of the JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! Show in Hollywood. The guests for tonight’s show were George Lopez and Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman. The audience was split – about 50% were there to see Lopez and 50% for the Dog. George Lopez was very funny and had both the audience and Jimmy Kimmel in stitches. Dog spoke about how he became a bounty hunter and how he got the nickname “Dog”. (I won’t go into that here. If anyone watched the show, they already heard these stories.) Dog’s common law wife, Beth Smith, was also in the audience and Dog announced that they are getting married for real in May of this year.

After the show, Dog and Beth stayed to talk with fans and take photos and sign autographs. Beth was asked where Leland (Dog’s son) and Tim (Dog’s brother and partner) were. Beth said that Leland was “in the closet” and Tim was at home with his wife and new baby. One fan said that she watched all of the DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER marathons that aired on A&E and Beth responded with a comment about how long it had been since A&E aired a new episode, echoing the sentiment of many fans of the show who have been upset with the many repeats that have been shown. Beth and Dog also brought free DVD’s of the 2nd season BEST OF DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER which will be released next week for everyone in the audience!

I have met a lot of celebrities (not trying to name drop but just for comparison) and I have to say both Dog and Beth were truly some of the nicest people I have ever met. Both were really gentle, polite souls and truly enjoyed meeting the fans and were very gracious with their time. I was really impressed with them both.

78th Annual Academy Awards Review
by Suzanne Philips

Many people were shocked and pleasantly surprised by this year's Oscars ceremony.

Jon Stewart did an admirable job as host, his sarcastic and politically tinged brand of humor coming across loud and clear. There were some nice clip packages with themes such as Film Noir and the In Memoriam segments. Stewart added his mark with faux "political slander" commercials aimed at Best Supporting Actress nominees narrated by Daily Show/the Colbert Report's comedian Stephen Colbert.

While some of the segments and awards could certainly have been cut to make the running time shorter, producers tried to keep the show moving and really enforced the time limit on the acceptance speeches. They cut off some winners with music and even by going to a commercial break. This was a bit off putting as they could have cut some of the clip packages and comedic segments to give everyone time to have their say. I mean the show is truly meant to be about the winners and they should have their time to shine.

Brokeback Mountain won both Adapted Screenplay and Director for Ang Lee, whose acceptance speech was thoughtful and humble and showed what a truly nice man Lee seems to be.

Rachel Weisz took home Best Supporting Actress for THE CONSTANT GARDENER and George Clooney was named Best Supporting Actor for SYRIANA. Clooney's speech was very impassioned as he spoke about how Hollywood is often criticized about being out of touch but they still have been the first people to focus on issues such as AIDS before it became acceptable to do so.

Philip Seymour Hoffman took the Best Actor statue for his role in CAPOTE, no surprise here as he was the favorite to win. The Best Actress category was also no surprise as Reese Witherspoon won for Walk The Lineand her portrayal of June Carter Cash. Witherspoon's speech was lovely and emotional and it was nice to see someone who was truly touched to have won.

The biggest "surprise" of the night - and I say surprise in quotes because it was truly not at all shocking to me - was the Best Picture of the year which went to Indie film CRASH and not the favorite BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. I have been saying for months that this was without a doubt one of the best films of the year. If you have not had a chance to check this out yet, do yourself a favor and go rent or buy the DVD, you will not be sorry. A great choice made by Oscar voters - BROKEBACK is a good film, CRASH is a great film and truly deserving.

In other awards of note, one of our faves here at CFM, Richard Taylor, won another Oscar for his work on THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA in the visual effects category to go with his LORD OF THE RINGS statue.

By far the most fun award was Best Original Song which went to Three 6 Mafia for the song "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" from the great Indie film HUSTLE & FLOW. These Memphis boys were so excited to be getting some recognition and truly deserved to win.

I felt it was one of the better ceremonies that we have seen, but no big surprises here.

The One Ring Celebration - 2006

Photo and Story By Suzanne Phillips

The One Ring Celebration
January 20-22, 2006
Pasadena, CA

Day 2, Saturday

My overall impressions of this years ORC convention are that it seems to be much smaller than last year. Less people and what seemed to me to be a lower turnout, less vendors than last year. One good thing I found was that there seemed to me to be less events which was actually kind of nice as you didn't have to run from one thing to another. I did, however, hear some grumbling from others about the number of guests and events going on throughout the weekend. They also had some major sound problems in the main auditorium and the mics kept cutting out. This was really annoying and even Elijah Wood made mention of it during his panel.

December 19, 2005  Merced, CA

Kids arrested while attending an all ages event. If anyone who was there that night reads this, please contact Liz Fox at lfox@mercedsun-star.com She is the one who will be writing an article about the events. The more eye-witness reports the better.

This was sent to the Merced Sun Star Newspaper by Trout I'm with a band from Bakersfield called Stereotactic. We were booked to play a show at the Mainzer Theater in Merced on Saturday, December 17th. At about 10:15pm, as were were setting up our equipment on stage, about 10 - 15 Merced Police officers entered the
building, announced that anyone under 18 would have to stand to one side of the room, and began handcuffing them.

We stood in awe as about 40 kids, ranging from 15 to 17 years of age were handcuffed, questioned, and taken outside to call their parents. Needless to say, the show was over before we were even able to play.

Now, we couldn't get a clear answer on what the actual curfew law is, but I'm pretty sure that it doesn't include minors who are indoors at an all ages venue, and who have paid to see live entertainment. If this is the case, are we just going to stand by as the SWAT team breaks into movie theatres and arrests the kids who are there after 10pm?

Allegedly, the police were called about some cars that were broken into a few blocks away, they then drove passed the Mainzer and saw some kids standing outside. When the police learned that they were minors, they quickly handcuffed the kids, made them call their parents to come pick them up, and called for back-up so they could get the rest of the kids who were inside.

Basically, we are very upset with the Merced Police Department. I will admit that all of the officers that we talked to were very polite, and they were most likely just following orders, but I question the person who is giving the orders. I know that Merced is not a large city, and I can assume that 10 - 15 police officers is a large chunk of the entire police force. Personally, I wouldn't feel very safe knowing that the police are out chasing kids who are out too late, rather than chasing actual criminals.

The part that really saddens me is that the owner of the Mainzer is now thinking of closing the theater down because of this. She told us that in the six years that she has been hosting events like the one on Saturday, she has never received even a slight warning about minors or a curfew violation. Not only did the Merced cost us money by shutting the show down before we were able to play, but they may have
potentially shut down a great all ages venue in Merced. Even if the Mainzer does stay open, are parents going to let their children go to shows thinking that their kids may be arrested if they're not picked up before 10pm?

I really hope that you could mention something about the incident in your paper. I'm not from the area, but I hope that this situation will be discussed by your city council and hopefully something positive can come from this.

Thank You.
